Daily Treasury Guidance for Tuesday, September 11, 2012

 

​In the morning, Secretary Geithner will depart Washington for New York to attend the September 11 Memorial Commemoration Ceremony hosted by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. This event is open press.

 

Following the ceremony, the Secretary will return to Washington.

 

In the afternoon, Secretary Geithner will meet with staff from Treasury’s Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence to recognize their efforts over the last eight years to disrupt and dismantle terrorist organizations’ funding networks. The office was established in 2004 to combat terrorist financing and other financial crimes and has played an instrumental role in dismantling al-Qaida’s ability to secure steady financing. This meeting is closed press.    

 

Deputy Secretary Neal S. Wolin traveled to Beirut, Lebanon today, where he met with senior government and financial industry officials to discuss efforts to prevent abuse of the Lebanese financial sector by illicit actors. The Deputy Secretary also discussed the need for Lebanese banks and regulatory authorities to remain vigilant against the evasion of sanctions by Iran and Syria.

 

In the morning, he met with Prime Minister Najib Mikati at the Grand Serail and with President Michel Sleiman at the Baabda. In the afternoon, he met with Banque du Liban Governor Riad Salameh and with members of the Association of Banks in Lebanon. He also met with Economy Minister Nicolas Nahhas at the Ministry of Economy.
