WASHINGTON — The U.S. General Services Administration today asked the public to merge tradition and technology by using the photo-sharing site Flickr to illustrate how America celebrates the 4th of July.

Flickr is one of several new media tools being utilized to increase public engagement with the federal government. The Flickr site is accessed though GovGab.gov, the U.S. government blog, where the public will also be able to post comments about this year’s holiday.

“Using new media platforms like GovGab and Flickr allows the public to have direct interaction with the government,” said Martha Dorris, Acting Associate Administrator for GSA’s Office of Citizen Services and Communications. “This technology keeps the public connected and communicating with each other more than ever before in new and fun ways.”

GSA-managed USA.gov and GobiernoUSA.gov—the federal government’s official web portal and its Spanish language counterpart – established the Flickr photo-sharing group after developing and signing a term of service agreement. The goal is an electronic photo album that embodies the theme “How do you celebrate the Fourth of July?”

Photo submissions are open to anyone 18 or older, with the understanding that photos may be highlighted on GovGab or the Facebook pages of USA.gov and GobiernoUSA.gov. The Flickr group will accept photos through July 5.
