Stay Active this Summer (and Save Energy, Money, and the Environment too!)

Many of us are looking to spend more time outdoors. Like many Americans, I’m thinking about ways to stay physically active and seize the sunny day. Here are five easy things that you can do this summer that will not only help keep you active and get you some Vitamin D, but save money, energy, and the environment too:

  1. Bike or walk to work instead of driving. This is a great way to get exercise and save money on gas costs and parking fees, as well as reduce carbon emissions.
  2. Walk, run, or exercise outside instead of using a treadmill or exercise video. Get some fresh air and save money on your energy bills from not having to use power from a treadmill or TV.
  3. Play outside. For entertainment, you can save money on your energy bills by putting away the electronics, and instead enjoy an outdoor sport or activity with your family or friends at the nearest park or beach.
  4. Dry your laundry outside with a clothesline instead of using a dryer. You can use free solar energy to dry your clothes instead of a dryer.
  5. Go to farmers markets for local, sustainable food instead of ordering that pizza in. By shopping at local farmers markets for sustainable food instead of ordering food in, you’ll get some physical activity and support the reduction of fuel costs and greenhouse gases that come from transporting non-locally grown food.
