Size of GSA Historic Buildings (Government-Owned Inventory):

  • 478 historic buildings listed and eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places
  • Historic buildings make up more than one fourth (25%) of GSA’s owned inventory and total more than 60 million rentable square feet in space

National Register of Historic Places (Government-Owned Inventory):

  • 302 buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places
  • 10 individually listed National Historic Landmarks, 86 listed as part of National Historic Landmark Districts
  • 7 buildings individually listed in the National Register of Historic Places that are under 50 years old and have been determined exceptionally important

Leases in Historic Buildings:

  • GSA leases space in 85 historic buildings

GSA’s American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) funding disproportionately benefited the nation’s public building legacy, with a total of $1.665 billion--40 percent of GSA’s ARRA funding--appropriated for work in 150 GSA historic buildings
