For Excellence in Cultural and Historical Resources:NJ Route 29 Tunnel/South Riverwalk Project The reconstructed two-mile stretch of Route 29 in Trenton, New Jersey is the location of an innovative tunnel-top, historic-focused park. The park which features permanent historic exhibits composed of sculptural arches representing five centuries of Trenton area history, a timeline of date stones, informative bronze plaques and signs enhance our understanding of the Trenton area. The project involved complex, multi-faceted historical and archaeological issues, significant research, subsurface testing, data recovery and monitoring during construction. A vast body of valuable material and information was obtained about the Trenton area. Emphasis was placed on recycling the results of the historical and archaeological research back into the local community in a tangible and educational manner. The park connects the Lamberton community to the Delaware River in a historically informative and enriching fashion. Improved access to historic downtown Trenton, sports, recreational and entertainment facilities on the waterfront provides economic opportunities and supports tourism. The park also serves as an outdoor history classroom, capable of educating visitors about the cultural heritage of the Delaware Valley. Project Contributors:
