For Excellence in Environmental Research:

North Carolina DOT's Environmental Research Program

North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has one of the most comprehensive and diverse environmental research programs in the nation. The growth of this program is driven by the State's commitment to environmental stewardship and its partnering effort with the regulatory agencies to deliver efficient, yet environmentally conscious transportation projects. Each research project has a Technical Steering and Implementation Committee that directs the research, reviews progress, and participates in research implementation. Although the NCDOT solely funds the environmental studies, experts from multiple regulatory agencies are invited to participate on these committees alongside NCDOT staff. The research program is a model for other states by virtue of its constant involvement and collaboration with regulatory agencies. This partnership promotes innovative solutions to environmental concerns, while delivering the transportation program and demonstrating stewardship of the natural and human environment. NCDOT has made great strides in progress and direction with their environmental research program and has contributed to the important mission of providing safe, cost-effective, environmentally compatible transportation projects.
