Functional Training for Foreign Service Family Members (US-based)
The Department of State is authorized to provide functional training to family members of U.S. Government direct-hire personnel anticipating an overseas assignment (section 704 of the Foreign Service Act of 1980). Functional training for anticipated prospective employment is offered to family members on a space available basis. To be eligible for most functional training, a family member must be a U.S. citizen whose spouse has been paneled for an overseas assignment. Email: FLOAskEmployment@state.gov for more information.

Language Courses (Foreign Service Institute) (US-based)
Enrollment of family members in language training and area studies is coordinated through the Bureau of Human Resources/Career Development and Assignments. The Department of State employee should contact his/her Assignments Officer for further information about enrolling a spouse in language training. Also see Distance Learning options and Post Language programs.
Family members, who are affiliated with non-Department of State agencies and posted to U.S. Missions abroad, are subject to their Agency regulations, procedures and funding, and should seek guidance from their Agency regarding funding and enrollment procedures.
Language Training at Post (Overseas)
Check to see if your post offers a Language Training Program. And better yet, ask if your post has a Language Grant Program that provides money for grant-sponsored trips intended to immerse students in language and culture! Also see Language Distance Learning Opportunities
Manpower Inc. Training (US-based and Overseas)
Foreign Service family members can take advantage of Manpower training courses. Manpower offers hundreds of online courses which can be accessed online from anywhere in the world.
GEI/SNAP Workshops at Embassies and Consulates (Overseas)
The Global Employment Initiative/Strategic Networking Assistance Program (GEI/SNAP) offers workshops on a variety of employment topics at embassies and consulates overseas. Check to see if your post (or next post) has a Global Employment Advisor. Recent workshops held overseas have covered areas such as resume writing, interviewing skills, continuing education, nursing, ESL, tax issues, and transitioning back to Washington, DC.
