Location Challenge: Snake River, Idaho

2012 June 4

Through this Wednesday, June 6, the Documerica, State of the Environment traveling exhibit is live at the Discovery Center of Idaho at 131 W Myrtle Street in Boise. Stop by if you live in the area! Otherwise, simply take a moment to enjoy these 1973 Documerica photos of the Snake River in Idaho by Boyd Norton.

Stay tuned later this week, as I was fortunate enought to catch up with Boyd recently and I can’t wait to share more about his ongoing work to protect wilderness around the globe.

Many still raft the Snake River today. If you are lucky enough to brave ‘Wild Sheep Rapids’ in the coming year, capture a ‘Now’ photograph for the project! If you live nearby, or are headed to this area, try to match one of these scenes and submit your entries to State of the Environment on Flickr. Let us know which Documerica image inspired you, as the best matches will be considered for a side by side display in the U.S. National Archives Exhibit: Searching for the Seventies: EPA’s Documerica Project planned for March – September 2013 in Washington, DC.

These images look back in time into some of our country’s wildest territory. This may be one of the few places that hasn’t changed over the last 40 years – wouldn’t that be great?

Telling the story of change is now up to you. Perhaps it’s just the color of the rafts or the number of visitors? Share photos of the landscapes, the people, and the way of life where you live and travel for State of the Environment. For a fun challenge, if you aren’t living nearby to match the scenes we feature, search the full Documerica collection to locate and match images closest to you.  All ‘Then and Now’ entries will all be considered for the DC exhibit.

When you follow that link above, you’ll come to a search page like this. Simply type in your town or state to see images of the past. Enjoy, have fun, and we can’t wait to see your contributions to this historic project!
