BPA has been working with regional wind developers since 2008 to find creative solutions to address periods when there is simply more power generation than the region can use.

On May 13, BPA issued its interim policy to temporarily limit energy generation BPA will replace thermal and wind generation limited by this policy with free hydropower from federal dams on the Columbia River system. BPA will continue working with its regional partners to develop a long-term solution to seasonal high water/high wind events.

To safeguard salmon and steelhead and assure reliable energy delivery during these unusually high seasonal river flows, BPA implemented its interim environmental redispatch policy for the first time on May 18, which it did as a last resort and had been working to avoid.

Given the availability of the ER Retro reports, BPA will no longer post the generation limitation summaries each morning. You may continue to access the ER Retro reports, for those days that environmental redispatch occurs, on this site and on the BPA Oversupply Web site at www.bpa.gov/go/oversupply.

From 11 p.m. June 7 through 5 a.m. June 8, BPA temporarily limited the energy output of regional generators, including wind generation. The output limited ranged from approximately 83 to 700 megawatts per hour, totaling about 2,650 megawatt hours.

From 11 p.m. June 6 through 5 a.m. June 7, BPA temporarily limited the energy output of regional generators, including wind generation. The output limited ranged from approximately 116 to 1217 megawatts per hour, totaling about 4,400 megawatt hours.

Over the past weekend, BPA temporarily limited the energy output of regional generators, including wind generation, as noted below. The total amount of generation impacted was about 3,162 megawatt hours.

From 11 p.m. June 5 through 5 a.m. June 6, BPA temporarily limited the energy output of regional generators, including wind generation. The output limited ranged from approximately 67 to 742 megawatts per hour, totaling about 2,551 megawatt hours.

Over the past weekend, BPA temporarily limited the energy output of regional generators, including wind generation, as noted below. The total amount of generation impacted was about 13,876 megawatt hours.

BPA temporarily limited the energy output of regional generators, including wind generators, from midnight until 5 a.m. May 27. During that period, approximately 58 to 408 megawatts per hour of wind generation were impacted, totaling about 1,350 megawatt hours.

BPA has developed three new products addressing renewable resource integration, the temporary oversupply of power and Environmental Redispatch. They are posted on BPA’s official Oversupply site.

[May 26, 11:14 a.m.]
From 11 p.m. May 25 through 4 a.m. May 26, BPA temporarily limited the energy output of regional generators, including wind generation. The output limited ranged from approximately 10 to 600 megawatts per hour, totaling about 1,301 megawatt hours.
Correction (Posted June 7): BPA did not temporarily limit output on May 25 as originally reported. Output was temporarily limited on May 26 from midnight to 4 a.m. totaling about 1,268 megawatt hours.

BPA will suspend its 3 p.m. postings until further notice because generation limits have not taken place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

On May 23 and 24, BPA temporarily limited the energy output of regional generators, including wind generation, from 11 p.m. May 23 through 5 a.m. May 24. The output limited ranged from approximately 17 to 175 megawatts per hour, totaling about 550 megawatt hours.

[May 23, 10:30 a.m.]
On May 23, BPA temporarily limited the energy output of regional generators, including wind generation, from midnight until 5 a.m. The output limited ranged from approximately 42 to 650 megawatts per hour, totaling about 1,967 megawatt hours.

On May 22, BPA temporarily limited generation twice: from midnight until 8 a.m. and again from 10 p.m. up to midnight of May 23. The output limited ranged from approximately 150 to 1,160 megawatts per hour, totaling about 7,964 megawatt hours.

On May 21, BPA temporarily limited generation over three periods:

from midnight. until 9 a.m.
from 5 to 7 p.m., and
from 10 p.m. up to midnight of May 22.

The output limited ranged from approximately 67 to 1,438 megawatts per hour, totaling about 10,405 megawatt hours.

On the evening May 20, BPA limited generation from 10 p.m. up to midnight of May 21, in a range of approximately 50 to 400 megawatts per hour, totaling about 450 megawatt hours.

BPA temporarily limited the energy output of regional generators, including wind generators, from 11 p.m. May 19 until 5 a.m. May 20. During that six hour period, approximately 600 to 1,200 megawatts per hour of wind generation, totaling about 5,300 megawatt hours, were impacted.

BPA temporarily limited the energy output of regional generators, including wind generators, from 11 p.m. May 18 until 5 a.m. May 19. During that six hour period, slightly less than 1,000 megawatts per hour of wind generation, totaling about 5,700 megawatt hours, were impacted.

BPA temporarily limited the energy output of regional generators, including wind generators, from midnight until 5 a.m. May 18. Approximately 200-350 megawatts of wind generation per hour, totaling about 1,400 megawatt hours, were impacted.
