We fit in very seamlessly with the other students. Were different, but at the same time, we're still college students at the end of the day. Our students are in the band, our students are in the choir, our students are on the football team, the baseball team, so in addition to participating in ROTC, they are also participating in other activities on campus.
Three days a week of PT, I wake up early in the morning, so the rest of the day is pretty much mine, other than my ROTC class. I go on the weekend to train once or twice a month and the rest of the time is just mine. It's civilian life, I go to class just like any other student, I do school work just like any other student.
Well, besides studying, I am also part of a sorority, I am part of an all female acapella group, and I also volunteer at the children's hospital. I can partake in athletics and get a great education from a great school and do Army ROTC all at the same time. I can fit in two different worlds. I can hone my military skills and also work on my academics and my social life and other aspects of my civilian life.
I'm extremely proud of them. I think they are excellent examples of the kind of students that we have at JMU. On the one hand, they've made a very special commitment and they serve a specific purpose. On the other hand, they very much fit into the typical student and student body.
It definitely takes a motivated, disciplined person to do well in ROTC and I think in life in general, but if it's there and it's something you want, it's definitely a good possibility and ROTC has been a great fit for me. I personally think Army ROTC is the best way you get to experience the college life like every other student and then, after you get to join the greatest Army that the world's ever seen.
