On June 23, 2010, Peter J. Smith was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the United States Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Smith began his career as an Assistant District Attorney in Philadelphia in 1971. Much of his career has been spent as a federal prosecutor. He served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from 1976 to 1987. He was named Senior Litigation Counsel in 1985 and served as Chief of the Criminal Division in 1986 and First Assistant United States Attorney in 1986-87. He became Pennsylvania’s first Inspector General in 1987. Mr. Smith served as the Deputy Chief of Environmental Crimes Section for the United States Department of Justice from 1994 to 1997. He also spent nearly eight years as head of the Office of Special Investigations in the Pennsylvania Department of the Auditor General and for approximately two of those years served also as Deputy Auditor General for Performance Audits. From 2007 to 2009, Mr. Smith was a Deputy State Treasurer in the Pennsylvania Treasury Department.

Mr. Smith graduated from King’s College in 1962, served in the U.S. Navy from 1962 to 1966 and received his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1971. He currently resides in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania.
