Each month the Current Employment Statistics program surveys about 141,000 businesses and government agencies, representing approximately 486,000 individual worksites, in order to provide detailed industry data on employment, hours, and earnings of workers on nonfarm payrolls for all 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and about 400 metropolitan areas and divisions.
Next Releases:
- Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment data for August 2012 are scheduled to be released on October 3rd, 2012, at 10:00 A.M. Eastern Time.
- Regional and State Employment and Unemployment data for September 2012 are scheduled to be released on October 19th, 2012, at 10:00 A.M. Eastern Time

Jobless rates were lower in July than a year earlier in 305 of the 372
metropolitan areas, higher in 52, and unchanged in 15. Nonfarm payroll
employment was up in 276 metropolitan areas over the year, down in 93,
and unchanged in 3.

In August, 26 states reported over-the-month unemployment
rate increases, 12 states and the District of Columbia had
decreases, and 12 states had no change. Nonfarm payroll
employment increased in 28 states, decreased in 21 states
and the district, and was unchanged in Colorado.
