solomons map

The Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Insular Affairs and the Director and staff members of the Office of Insular Affairs (OIA) commend the U.S. Department of State for extending this Federal assistance to the people of the Solomon Islands.  All in OIA offer their heartfelt prayers as the people of the Solomon Islands valiantly embark on the road to recovery.

Some of the heaviest fighting of World War II occurred in the Solomon Islands, home to Guadalcanal, one of the bloodies and most decisive battles of the Pacific campaign.  The Solomon Islands has been an independent nation since 1978, is part of the Melanesian grouping of islands in the southwestern Pacific and is home to a population of approximately 550,000.  It is a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state.
