Soldiers help the Haitian people remove rubble from the roads of Portau-Prince.

A group of paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Divisions 2nd Brigade Combat team has been asked to take on a slightly different mission than humanitarian assistance for Operation Unified Response.
Two Squads from the 2nd Battalion 325th Infantry Regiment head out on foot deeper into an earthquake devastated part of Haiti lead by a German rescue team. The team said they really didn't expect the flood of assistance the U.S. was giving.
German Rescue Team Member: I did not expect to see all you guy's here to tell you the truth. And I'm very glad that I do.The 82nd Airborne Division not only does humanitarian assistance but has also been tasked out to help out with the Urban search and Rescue Teams. They're helping out right now in keeping security around this area, since this is a rough part of town.
Specialist Jeffery Valentine expresses his thoughts on coming to Haiti. This is why I joined the Army I'm happy this is my first deployment and I'm happy for it to be a humanitarian. As of right now there is no threat it's just the people are just hungry and thirsty and we just don't want them trying to overrun the rescue workers. The center piece of this town which was the church that to which you see in the background after two earthquakes the roof has completely collapse and has become nothing more than just rubble.
Walking through the streets filled with trash, sewage, and body parts is very overwhelming for the new paratroopers. As you can see behind me this is what the search and rescue teams actually go through after searching and seeing if there is anybody still alive within the building they make these markings right on the wall to make sure that no other search and rescue teams covers the area twice.
These paratroopers were able to see and understand the suffering first hand as they walked the streets of Port-au-Prince. The rescue workers kept busy as the 82nd stood close by keeping them safe until their mission was complete.
Although security isn't the 82nd top priority they stand ready to accomplish any mission that Joint Task Force and Operation Unified Response deemed necessary. Reporting from Haiti, I'm army Sergeant Caleb Barrieau.
