The Engineering Laboratory (EL) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology promotes U.S. innovation and competitiveness by anticipating and meeting the measurement science, standards, and technology needs of the U.S. building and fire safety industries (builders, suppliers, owners and operators, codes and standards organizations, building and fire safety officials/ professionals, and insurers) in ways that enhance economic security and improve the quality of life. The laboratory conducts investigations at the scene of major fires as well structural failures due to earthquakes, hurricanes, or other causes. The knowledge gained from these investigations guides research and is applied to recommendations for design and construction practices to reduce hazards. The EL Facilities listed here are available for cooperative or independent research, typically on a cost reimbursable basis. Contact
