Visibility is directed towards research for near–term improvement of the visibility on and along the roadway and of traffic control devices to enhance the safety of road users. Visibility also promotes opportunities that advance new practices and technologies to improve visibility on a cost–effective basis. Some examples include investigations into the effectiveness of innovative means of marking, signing, signaling and lighting through direct photometric and/or colorimetric measurements, and by supporting human factors studies of the effectiveness of new technologies
Visibility is a crosscutting program that provides technical support to the lane departure segment of Roadway Departure, as well as the Intersections, Pedestrians and Bicyclists, and Comprehensive Approach to Safety focus areas. Primary research areas include: the safety impacts of roadway lighting, traffic control devices technology, and development of models of the visual information available to road users and the level of visual information required for appropriate performance.
