State-Based Tracking Systems
Florida
Program: Florida Birth Defects Registry (FBDR)
Organization: Florida Department of Health
Project Period: February 2010–January 2015
Project Director: Sharon Watkins, PhD
Website: http://www.fbdr.org
The Florida Birth Defects Registry (FBDR) was created in 1999 to collect, analyze, and disseminate information on birth defects in Florida. FBDR monitors about 240,000 births per year. FBDR is a statewide population-based birth defects tracking system that collects information on babies with birth defects up to one year after delivery. Through state and local collaborations, FBDR works to reduce the occurrence of over 9,000 cases of birth defects each year in Florida.
Grantee Goals and Activities
Surveillance
- Improve and expand existing sources of birth defects data to find and confirm cases statewide for selected birth defects.
- Continue on-going tracking of babies with neural tube defects.
- Disseminate birth defects data through an annual report, published articles, and a birth defects conference.
Prevention
- Reduce the occurrence of preventable birth defects, such as anencephaly and spina bifida, by distributing multivitamins and targeting at-risk groups.
- Work on specific birth defects prevention and education activities, such as the statewide folic acid education campaign and fetal alcohol interventions.
Referrals
- Monitor and improve health services to positively affect children’s health and development.
- Describe the system of care, patterns, and determinants of service use, and level of family satisfaction with services available for children with birth defects.
- Evaluate effectiveness of referral activities.
