The Arizona Birth Defects Monitoring Program (ABDMP) is a state-wide, population-based registry that was created in 1986. ABDMP monitors about 100,000 births each year in Arizona and collects information from multiple sources on babies with birth defects up to one year after delivery. It also identifies groups at high risk for birth defects, works to prevent birth defects, and coordinates follow-up services.
Grantee Goals and Activities
Surveillance
- Track major birth defects in Arizona using both active and passive case finding methods.
- Determine cost-effective ways to collect data in a timely manner.
- Publish data in reports, on the web, and through other channels.
Prevention
- Work with state and community groups to promote folic acid intake in women of child-bearing age to reduce the risk of neural tube defects.
- Focus on preventable risk factors, such as smoking and alcohol use during pregnancy, among Latinos and Native Americans.
- Make data available to medical professionals in Arizona to promote and evaluate prevention activities.
Referrals
- Refer children with birth defects to the Children’s Rehabilitative Services and Arizona Early Intervention Program.
- Develop a referral tool to find out which services have been received by children with a neural tube defect or an orofacial cleft and to assess their health status at one year of age.
