FVS Software Complete Package

The FVS Software Setup Program file covers all Regions of the National Forest System. It includes the FVS program files, the graphical interface (Suppose), pre- and post-processors, the Stand Visualization System (SVS), sample data, and Regional Exerise Guide in a single, easy-to-install program. These are the files associated with the basic FVS training sessions in each Region.

Additional Support Notes

  • We update the setup file on a regular basis to keep up with the component updates.
  • You may update prior installations of the FVS software by simply reinstalling using the newer setup program. Alternatively, you may add and update components by following the links on the menu to the left.
  • The FVS Setup package includes the regional-specific workbooks and sample data. Exercises included in the workbooks are an excellent FVS tutorial.

FVS Setup Program Installation Instructions

The FVS software setup program is a single executable that will install the standard suite of programs often associated with the Forest Vegetation Simulator. Installing all the components will require up to 150 MBs of hard drive space, depending on the region you select.

When you install a new setup package, it will overwrite any old files on your computer, including the training data set and blank database

If you installed a previous version of the FVS setup program, it is suggested you first uninstall the previous version before proceeding with installing another setup program.

Removal of Previous Installations

If you have never installed the FVS Suite of programs before on your system, you may skip ahead to the Installing FVS Software section of these instructions. Otherwise, follow these steps to remove your existing FVS software.

  1. Go to Start, Settings..., Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Scroll down to the program's name in the Install/Uninstall box, "FVS Software", "TOSS", and/or "FVSStand". Select the program's name. Click the "Change/Remove..." button. You may have to do this more than once depending on the versions of the program you have installed and whether you have updated an earlier setup program.
  3. The program removal program will begin. You will be asked whether you are sure that you want to remove the program and all of its components. Click the "Yes" button to continue.

Installing FVS Software

To load the current FVS software, perform the following steps.

  1. Click the link for the appropriate FVS setup package in the table above to begin downloading it.
  2. You will be asked to open the file or save the file to your computer. Click the "Save" button.
  3. Save the executable to the "My Documents" folder on your hard drive.
  4. When the executable has finished downloading, choose to open the setup executable by clicking the "Open" button. If you do not have this option, navigate to your "My Documents" folder and double-click on the executable. Either option will begin the installation process.
  5. Following a splash screen, you will be prompted to click the "Next" button in the window that appears. Press that button.
  6. In the next window that appears, click to place a check mark next to the geographic region(s) for which you want the files installed. Then click the "Next" button.
  7. In the next window that appears, click the "Install" button. The setup program will now start loading all program files and example datasets needed to run FVS in your region.
  8. When installation is finished, click the "Finish" button. You have installed the FVS programs and example data!
