How stratified is the society in Estonia? How are resources distributed? The aim of the publication is to provide a multi-dimensional overview on and an analysis of social inequality in the society of Estonia. The analysis focuses on material inequality and stratification in the society, but attention is also paid to the distribution of educational, cultural and health resources and to the existence of social resources. Indicators which are comparable over time help to follow the changes that have occurred and the related influence factors, providing a better insight into what is going in the society.
The industrial producer price index continued to increase in November
According to Statistics Estonia, in November 2016, the producer price index of industrial output changed by 0.6% compared to October 2016 and by 1.5% compared to November 2015.
In the 3rd quarter, the Dwelling Price Index increased
According to Statistics Estonia, in the 3rd quarter of 2016, the Dwelling Price Index changed by 3.4% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2016 and by 7.4% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2015.
The share of the service sector in counties has grown
According to Statistics Estonia, differences in the economic structures of counties have increased, while the majority of the value added generated in the Estonian economy was still created in Harju County. 69% of the gross value added in Estonia was created in the service sector, the share of which has increased in seven counties in the last four years.
Last year every fifth person in Estonia lived in relative poverty
According to Statistics Estonia, in 2015, 21.3% of the Estonian population lived in relative poverty and 3.9% in absolute poverty. The overall percentage of people living in relative poverty decreased 0.3 percentage points compared to the previous year, the percentage of people living in absolute poverty decreased 2.4 percentage points.
In October, more tourists stayed in accommodation establishments compared to a year ago
According to Statistics Estonia, in October 2016, domestic and foreign tourists who stayed in Estonian accommodation establishments numbered 267,000, which was 7% more than in October 2015.
In October, export growth was supported by the exports of goods of Estonian origin
According to Statistics Estonia, in October 2016, the exports of goods increased by 2% and imports by 3% compared to October of the previous year. Compared to October 2015, the exports of goods of Estonian origin increased by 3% and re-exports, i.e. the exportation of goods imported from a foreign country, stayed at the same level.
In the 3rd quarter, economic growth was driven by transportation, trade and the energy sector
According to the second estimates of Statistics Estonia, the gross domestic product (GDP) of Estonia increased 1.3% in the 3rd quarter of 2016 compared to the 3rd quarter of the previous year. The biggest contribution to GDP growth was made in the economic activity of transportation, followed by trade and the energy sector.
In the 3rd quarter, the number of job vacancies reached a record high of 11,000
According to Statistics Estonia, there were about 11,000 job vacancies in the enterprises, institutions and organisations of Estonia in the 3rd quarter of 2016. The number of job vacancies reached a 7-year high, having increased by 16% compared to the previous quarter and by 25% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2015.
The quantity of pesticides placed on the market in Estonia increased in 2015
According to Statistics Estonia, 691 tons of pesticides (by active substance) were placed on the market in Estonia in 2015, which was 15% more than in the previous year. The quantity of sold pesticides has been increasing in the last five years.
