Dr. Piven examined the implications for the basic tenets of electoral representative democracy in the United States of three major changes: the growing influence of money in lobbying and campaigns; the vast expansion of propaganda in both mass media and astroturf forms; and the resurgence of methods of election administration that depress voting among particular groups.
