Narrative description for Chart 2.
Average age when first reporting covered earnings or first meeting the thresholds among those reporting covered earnings, by year of birth

In Chart 2, there are four vertical lines indicating the average age at which individuals born in a specific birth year–given in the bottom horizontal axis, from 1946 through 1980–first report earnings that exceed the average wage index. The top horizontal axis shows that the maximum age a person born in 1950, 1960, 1970, and 1980 can attain in the year 2003 (the final year of data) is 53, 43, 33, and 23, respectively. Vertical line #1 shows that in birth year 1950, the average age of persons first reporting covered earnings is 29 and highlights the fact that the maximum age that someone born in 1950 can achieve in 2003 (the final year of data) is 53 years old. Vertical line #2 shows that in birth year 1960, the average age of persons first reporting covered earnings is 28 and highlights the fact that the maximum age that someone born in 1960 can achieve in 2003 (the final year of data) is 43 years old. Vertical line #3 shows that in birth year 1970, the average age of persons first reporting covered earnings is 27 and highlights the fact that the maximum age that someone born in 1970 can achieve in 2003 (the final year of data) is 33 years old. Vertical line #4 shows that in birth year 1980, the average age of persons first reporting covered earnings is 22 and highlights the fact that the maximum age that someone born in 1980 can achieve in 2003 (the final year of data) is 23 years old.
