Laws and Regulations
The laws and regulations governing the Presidential transition, dating from 1963 to the present, are designed to help those officials who are departing as well as presidential nominees and employees. These laws and regulations provide an ethical framework and firm guidelines in the following areas:
- Establishes the orderly transfer of the executive power in connection with the expiration of the term of office of a President and the inauguration of a new President.
- Maintenance and continuity of records
- Travel expenses and relocation reimbursement
- Projected transitional budgets
- The filling of vacant executive agency positions
The most recently created legislation in 2010 also provides a framework in advance of the president’s election for supporting the staff of eligible presidential candidates, so as to ease the transition period following the election.
