Healing Families is located at Theodora House, a 112-bed residential center serving women with involvement in the criminal justice systems. Operating as a continuum of services to women in the correctional system, Healing Families utilizes a therapeutic milieu based on the national gender responsive best practice model that includes a holistic health model of addiction, relational theory and trauma theory. Healing Families program goal is to provide strengths-based, client-centered, and family-focused interventions to each woman in an environment that instills a feeling of hope, empowerment, positive change, and community involvement.
The supportive milieu is supplemented with individually developed case management, treatment, and evidence-based curriculum that promotes a successful transition and family reunification. Using this premise as a foundation for our work, staff focuses on five core pillars of programming, which include treatment, family reunification, education, social, and life skills/self improvement. Family functioning is positively impacted as women exhibit improved recovery management, resilience and successful community reintegration. Participants report an increased satisfaction with personal, work and family relationships and gain greater understanding and knowledge of responsible parenting. Families gain enhanced parent/child experiences that support the changing dynamics of their mother’s re-entry into the home, and shifting of parental roles and responsibilities from caregiver to the mother.
Evidence-based practices include motivational interviewing and Marilyn Van Dieten's "Moving On" curriculum.
