The IHS Division of Diabetes is responsible for developing, documenting and sustaining clinical and public health efforts to treat and prevent diabetes in American Indians and Alaska Natives. This mission is accomplished by promoting collaborative strategies for the prevention of diabetes and its complications through its extensive diabetes network. The diabetes network consists of the Division’s national program office, Area Diabetes Consultants, Model Diabetes Programs and Special Diabetes Program for Indians grantees.
The SDPI is a federal grant program established by Congress in 1997 in response to the growing epidemic of diabetes in American Indian and Alaska Native communities. These grants provide funding for diabetes treatment and prevention services at IHS, Tribal and Urban Indian health programs.
There are currently two major grant components:
- The Community-Directed diabetes programs
- The Diabetes Prevention Program and Health Heart Project Initiatives
Congress established the Model Diabetes Program in 1979 to translate research into diabetes care activities in Native communities and to develop and share strategies for prevention and treatment with other communities. There are 19 programs in 23 different sites in the Indian Health system.
