Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge
Internships

Internship opportunities exist at Noxubee in three different areas of study, Environmental Education, Biology, and Forestry. All internships offer housing and a $75.00 per week stipend. We require that you have your own transportation and stay for at least twelve weeks.

Wildlife/Biological - These positions will give the student a good overview of field biology work in a refuge setting. Wetlands, forest ecology, endangered species (red-cockaded woodpecker management), wood duck management, GIS, and fire management are a few of the ongoing projects in our wildlife program. Forestry - Forestry interns learn the day-to-day operation of a forest management program. Cruising timber, fire management and more tasks will be performed alongside our foresters. Southern pine forests, upland hardwoods and bottomland hardwoods are the habitats we manage. Visit our forestry internship page Forestry Internship for more information.

Environmental Education - This is an internship available year-round. Interns in this position perform front line interpretation. Public tours, including owl prowls, alligator counts, hikes, bird watching trips, and more are offered in the evenings and on the weekends. School groups, scouts, and other groups fill up most of the weekdays. Programs teaching wetland ecology, endangered species, and wildlife management help the students learn about the Fish & Wildlife Service, and what can be done to help protect their environment. Also, in 1999, a new environmental education center was constructed by the Starkville School District on Noxubee Refuge. It is the Noxubee Conservation Center. Interns in this position will have the opportunity to work with the teaching staff at this new site and gain valuable experience in nature interpretation and program development.
