News: Florida National Guard celebrates 447 years

ST AUGUSTINE, Fla. - On Sept. 8, St. Augustine, Fla., celebrated its 447th Anniversary and Sept. 14, the Florida National Guard commemorated its 447th anniversary of the first muster of citizen soldiers in the continental United States.
The daylong celebration included re-enactors from Florida Living history with weapons displays and firing demonstrations on the front lawn of the St. Francis Barracks. The Menorcan cultural society displayed fishing nets and tools as a part of their historical display, and the Florida National Guard opened the doors to the St. Francis museum which are rarely open to the general public.
The Command retreat ceremony capped off the day with a demonstration from the members of Florida Living History. The adjutant general of Florida, Maj. Gen. Emmitt R. Titshaw, Jr., reflected on the history of the humble beginnings of the citizen soldiers to our service members who are deployed around the world today in support of our Nation’s missions.
