The LTBP team presented a status update on the program at the TRB’s 90th Annual Meeting on Thursday, January 27, 2011, at the Marriott Wardman in Washington, D.C. Conference participants learned about the data that were collected thus far, and they were given a sneak peek of the program’s Bridge Portal. The portal is a data management system, which enables users to navigate, analyze, and search bridge specific data, and other types of transportation-related, third-party data (i.e., weather and crash data). The meeting concluded with a panel discussion from leading bridge engineers and researchers in the bridge community.

The LTBP team has selected all seven bridges for its pilot study. The pilot study was designed to validate the methods and protocols developed during the first phase of the program. It was also designed to investigate various uncertainties about the coordination of the fieldwork, so that high quality data collection can be ensured, while minimizing disruptions to traffic flow. The bridge sites are located in California, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Utah, Virginia—and now, Florida. [Read More]
The LTBP team began rolling out the Bridge Portal tool to State DOTs at the end of 2010. The LTBP program aims at a better understanding of the principles underlying performance issues of bridge structures, an understanding that ultimately will lead to a better way of managing the bridge infrastructure by minimizing life-cycle costs and improving current asset management strategies.
