This year's mild winter and spring were a bonanza for tick populations in the eastern U.S. Reports of tick-borne diseases have been rising fast. Lyme disease is more common in the Northeast and Upper Midwest, but new results show that Lyme is not the greatest cause for concern in the Southeast. Ehrlichiosis and spotted fever rickettsiosis are.

Seeing Nature's Patterns

Scientists are taking a new look at Earth-patterns, from the biodiversity of yard plants in the U.S. to that of desert mammals in Israel. From where flowers and bees live on the Tibetan plateau to how willow trees in America's Midwest make use of water. They're finding that two fields of science--ecology and phylogenetics--are inextricably intertwined.
