Merging traditional ecological knowledge with science for ecosystem restoration decision making, Sep. 30 ~ Oct. 5
Traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) of ecosystem harvesters, a sophisticated system of knowing, can make an important contribution to ecosystem restoration efforts. However, because it has not been widely used, there is uncertainty about it and the steps and methods that can be employed to benefit from it. Drawing from a five-year project in the coastal wetlands of Louisiana to develop a physical science/social science tool to engage scientists with harvesters, this workshop will demonstrate the technique, its underlying theory and concepts and the methods used. It will demonstrate its application in the challenging restoration of coastal Louisiana wetlands. The workshop will have as its goal achieving wider use of TEK knowledge in ecosystem restoration efforts. It will also seek input from workshop participants who themselves have elicited TEK in their ecosystem preservation/restoration efforts so as to hone the best practices for doing so. Scientists and harvesters from the project will participate in the coastal Louisiana field trip offered by the Eco Summit before the conference. Therefore, attendees of the field trip will be able to bring to the workshop contextual understanding of the study site.

The 17th annual American Indian College Fund Flame of Hope Gala will be held at The Depot in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Thursday, October 11 to raise funds for scholarships to benefit needy Native students. A reception will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by a dinner program at 7 p.m.

Tribal Rights, Sovereignty and Economic Development, Las Vegas, NV., Oct 18 - 19
Throughout Indian Country, there are significant legal issues impacting tribal rights and sovereignty. Many of these issues are addressed by tribal leaders attending the National Congress of American Indians' Annual Convention, set to take place this year from October 21-26 in Sacramento, California. To help tribal leaders, and their attorneys, get ready for their NCAI discussions, this conference will offer in-depth looks at a number of hot topics, including the settlement of trust fund management lawsuits, taxation, tribal water rights, and federal responsibilities for funding tribal contracts in the wake of Salazar v. Ramah Navajo Chapter.
The conference will also place significant focus on tribal energy and environmental matters, including the interplay with recent federal efforts to regulate Indian Country. 2012 AFN Convention, Anchorage, AK., Oct 18 - 20
The 2012 AFN Convention will be the largest representative annual gathering in the United States of any Native peoples. Delegates are elected on a population formula of one representative per twenty-five Native residents in the area and delegate participation rates at the annual convention typically exceed 95 percent. Each year the AFN Convention draws between 4,000–5,000 attendees. The proceedings are broadcast live via television, radio and webcast reaching a diverse audience from Barrow to Ketchikan, from the Aleutian Chain to the Canadian border. During the convention, the entire state of Alaska is blanketed with discussion on current events and issues.
