WASHINGTON, D.C.—GENERAL JOHNSON TO ACCOMPANY FALEOMAVAEGA TO AMERICAN SAMOA TO ASSESS AMERICAN SAMOA’S SHORELINES

Congressman Faleomavaega announced today that Brigadier General Ronald Johnson, Director of the Pacific Ocean Division (POD) of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has agreed to accompany him to American Samoa next week for purposes of assessing American Samoa’s shorelines.

“I am also pleased that Governor Sunia has extended an invitation for General Johnson to attend our Flag Day festivities,” Congressman Faleomavaega said.  “General Johnson and I will be accompanied by Mr. Bong S. "Paul" Yoo, Chief, Civil Works Division, Civil Works & Technical Directorate, POD and Mr. Stanley J. Boc, Hydraulic Engineer, Honolulu Engineer District, POD.”

“We will be visiting the islands of Ta’u, Olesaga and Ofu as well as Tutuila,” Congressman Faleomavaega said.  “At my request, the General has agreed to conduct an Army Corps of Engineer review of our shorelines for the possible construction of seawalls to prevent further erosion of our village roads and lands.  The General has also agreed to review the Western District shoreline on Tutuila island for possible construction of a mid-size marina similar to the marinas built on the islands of Ofu and Ta’u.”

“General Johnson and I discussed these matters during his last visit to Washington.  I also had the pleasure of discussing this assessment with General Johnson’s key personnel last month while enroute to the District,” Congressman Faleomavaega said.  “In addition, I have shared my concerns with Senator Inouye and also requested his support of our efforts.”

“I am pleased that this matter is moving forward and I thank General Johnson for accepting my invitation to visit American Samoa.  General Johnson will be arriving by military aircraft and is tenatively scheduled to arrive on Tuesday April 16, 2002,” the Congressman concluded.
