| Congressman Faleomavaega was informed today by the
U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs that it has awarded
the American Samoa Government $300,000.00 through a cooperative agreement
with the Department of Public Safety (DPS). The award was made possible
under the National Criminal History Improvement Program as authorized by
Congress under Title I of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act.
Information from Department of Justice indicates that funds will
be used to provide personnel, fringe benefits, travel, equipment, supplies,
consultants/contracts and other. Specifically, the award will allow
the Department of Public Safety (1) to replace its old computer file server
with new equipment; (2) to upgrade and increase the number of workstations
from 25 to 50; and (3) to increase client access from 25 users to 50 users.
The grant period is from October 1, 2000 to September 30, 2001.

federal grant to upgrade its office systems and cover some of the personnel
related costs,” Congressman Faleomavaega said. “I congratulate Acting
Commissioner, High Chief Tuiteleleapaga Ioane and members of his staff
for the fine job they are doing and for continuing to improve the services
