Dr. Frank Calvano is a native of Pennsylvania, where he began his teaching career. After three years in the public school system, he joined the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where he served as a guidance counselor.
Two years later, he transferred to Germany where he taught and began his career as an administrator. Fifteen years later he moved to Spain. When Zaragoza Air Base closed, four years after his arrival, he moved to Italy where he worked for two years. In 1994, he went to the DoDEA Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) in Kentucky. He came up from the ranks, serving first as guidance counselor, next as teacher, then assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent, community superintendent, and now Kentucky District Superintendent.
He has worked in DDESS since 1994 when he was named assistant superintendent of the DDESS Fort Knox Community Schools. He was selected as the DDESS Kentucky District Superintendent, in 2003.
Calvano earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Edinboro University, Penn., and his doctoral degree from the University of Southern California.
He and his wife, Maria, have one daughter, who lives in the Washington, D.C. area.
