WISER 4.4 and WISER for iPhone/iPod touch 1.1 are now available!

WISER 4.4 is now available!  You can download this update to WISER’s Windows, Pocket PC, and SmartPhone platforms from the WISER Web site (http://wiser.nlm.nih.gov/), or access the updated on-line version, WebWISER (http://webwiser.nlm.nih.gov/getHomeData.do).

In addition, WISER for iPhone/iPod touch 1.1 is now available from Apple’s App Store.

Coming this Spring and Summer for WISER are:

    1) Enhancements to WISER for iPhone/iPod touch, including the help identify tool, and iPad-focused support.

    2) WISER for the Android platform.

The National Library of Medicine announces the activation of the Emergency Access Initiative in support of medical efforts in Japan following the devastating earthquake and tsunami.   The Emergency Access Initiative is a collaborative partnership between NLM and participating publishers to provide free access to full-text articles from over 230 biomedical serial titles and over 65 reference books and online databases to healthcare professionals and libraries affected by disasters. 

The Emergency Access Initiative serves as a temporary collection replacement and/or supplement for libraries affected by disasters that need to continue to serve medical staff and affiliated users.  It is also intended for medical personnel responding to the specified disaster. 

EAI is not an open access collection – it is only intended for those affected by the disaster or assisting the affected population.  If your library is working with a library or organization involved in relief efforts in Japan, please let them know of this service.

 The National Library of Medicine (NLM), the world’s largest library of the health sciences, is recruiting for the Deputy Associate Director for Library Operations. The successful candidate will participate fully in directing and managing all activities of the Division of Library Operations. This includes formulating, establishing, and interpreting policies; developing, analyzing, and evaluating programs; implementing operating plans; assessing resource requirements; and formulating budget requests. The staff of nearly 300 federal and more than 300 contract employees is organized into exemplary public services, technical services, and bibliographic services staffs; a world-renown history of medicine division; and three offices consisting of vocabulary-related activities, health services research, and management of the more than 4000 member National Network of Libraries of Medicine. The Deputy Associate Director for Library Operations also oversees the NLM Library Associate Program and a small staff that perform a wide-variety of administrative functions. Among the many exciting NLM programs for which Library Operations takes the lead are the scanning and preservation of historical items, the creation of a digital repository for monographs and other non-journal formats, the utilization of a AI system for MEDLINE indexing, and the development of products for patients and their families such as mobile MedlinePlus.

 Save the Date for Virtual Participation!

 IHA will be holding an interactive virtual preconference session on May 4th to discuss the National Action Plan to Improve Health Literacy. The first part of this session will be available to anyone in the country. Join in the social media discussion and hear how other organizations around the country are using the National Action Plan, and join the discussion with information about what you’re doing or suggestions for others. Then, conference attendees can stay for an instructional session to help you draft an Action Plan for your organization. The virtual portion of the conference takes place from 12noon – 1:30pm PT. More details on how to participate virtually will be posted online in the next month.
