COPENHAGEN, Denmark – Adm. Mark Fitzgerald, commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa, Laurie S. Fulton, U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, and Cmdr. Lyle Hall, commanding officer of USS Taylor (FFG 50) co-hosted a reception for more than 115 distinguished guests aboard the ship here, Aug. 12.
The reception was held as part of a weeklong celebration of the 500-year anniversary of the Danish navy.
“Our partnership with Denmark goes a lot deeper than just [Denmark’s] navy,” said Fitzgerald. “Denmark has been one of our best partners in dealing with [several] world crises from Afghanistan to Somalia.”
During the reception, Fitzgerald and Fulton had the opportunity to meet with various representatives of the Danish government.
“The U.S. is a very close ally to Denmark,” said Gitte Lillelund Bech, Denmark’s minister of defense. “This celebration shows that we have very good international allies, and that we want to support each other.”
Twenty-nine ships from 15 nations arrived in Copenhagen to participate in the celebration.
“It’s the history of several hundred years of close relationships with Denmark,” said Fulton. “The 500-year anniversary of the Danish navy is a big event for Denmark. [500 years] is more than twice as long as the United States has been a country, and to have them include us means they think of us as one of their closest friends.”
