U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Assistant Secretary Russlynn Ali, along with local officials, will announce the successful resolution of the first proactive civil rights enforcement action taken by the Department of Education under the Obama Administration.

The "compliance review" of the Los Angeles Unified School District was launched in March 2010 to assess whether English Learner (EL) students were being denied equal educational opportunities. The probe was later expanded to investigate resource comparability for the District's African-American students as compared to white students, particularly in racially concentrated African-American schools.

Duncan and Ali will discuss the terms of the resolution at a press conference with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy.
