MedlinePlus Connect Web Service

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

Posted on behalf of the MedlinePlus Team, NLM:

Today we released the MedlinePlus Connect Web service, which complements the previously released Web application. The Web service will give EHRs more flexibility in how they return MedlinePlus information and links to patients and providers.

Technical details for how to implement the service are available at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/connect/service.html. To show how the service responds to requests, we created a Web service demonstration page, http://apps.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/services/servicedemo.cfm. You can continue to access overview and other information at http://medlineplus.com/connect.

Also, we created a page that lists some of the health care organizations and electronic health record systems that are using MedlinePlus Connect. See http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/connect/users.html. This is not a comprehensive list.

The groups on this list have told us they are using MedlinePlus Connect and agreed to appear on this page. Organizations or EHR systems who are using MedlinePlus Connect and want to be added to the list can send us a note through the Contact Us link at the top of any MedlinePlus page.

 Thank you,

Stephanie

PHTC: On Monday, March 21 HRSA posted the FY2011 grant competition for the Public Health Training Centers (PHTC) Program We have $6.5 million in funding available through FY 2011 appropriation and the Prevention and Public Health Fund  for up to 10 cooperative agreements (up to $650,000 each annually) to support up to ten new Public Health Training Centers (PHTCs) as cooperative agreements in an amount up to $650,000 each annually. PHTCs provide education, training and other services to help meet public health workforce needs and address related shortages.  NOTE re eligibility: Supplemental applications from existing centers MAY be submitted through this announcement, although the intent of the competition is to stand up new centers. HRSA will clarify this on the TA call, as well.

Award Report: Library Technology Expansion – Vassar Brothers Medical Center

Friday, April 1st, 2011

In May of 2010, the librarian attended a CME committee meeting at which two physicians expressed their opinion about the inadequacy of the physical space and electronic resources of the library.  In response we immediately embarked on a mission to do two things:

  1. re-design the existing library space, and
  2. improve access to electronic-based resources.

By applying for and receiving a technology grant from the NN/LM, we have been able to fulfill the first part of the mission – to create a new technology space in the existing square footage.  We did this by migrating back issues to the storage room and removing all of the old steel shelving.  We replaced an out-of-date computer with five new computers with updated software, and placed those new computers into downview computer desks – designed in such a way that the monitors are below the desktop, thereby creating open workspace.  This design allows for three things to occur in the same space – online research, personal study and collaborative work.  The second part of the mission involves implementation of a re-designed website, with the goal of seamless access to PubMed with LinkOut, a suite of e-resources and specialty links, and expanded e-journal and e-book collections – all readily accessible on our new computers.  Mission accomplished!
