* The "Character Field" data type is used to allow leading zeros in these data fields when required.

Country Code:          N, NN, or NNN, where each N represents a number from 0 through 9. The first digit of the country code is always a number from 1 through 9; a leading zero is not permitted.

City (routing) Code: A one- to six-digit number (e.g., N, NN, NNN, etc.), where each N represents a number from 0 through 9.

Local Area Code:   NNN, where each N represents a number from 0 through 9.

Local Number:       Usually a four-, five-, or six-digit number (e.g.,  NNNN, NNNNN, or NNNNNN), where each N represents a number from 0 through 9. Local telephone numbers may include an area code and extend to eight digits or more. When applicable, a hyphen shall be used to separate the local telephone prefix from the local telephone number (e.g., NNN-NNNN or NNNN-NNNN).

This data element standard should also be used for international facsimile (FAX) numbers, when applicable.

Service staff are strongly encouraged to utilize this data element in existing systems, data sets, databases, and information applications. Where existing systems and data-related items are not in compliance, they should be modified to achieve compatibility and implement this data standard.

The following United States territories and associated areas are not part of the NANP and require, at a minimum, an IAC or IDD prefix and a Country Code: American Samoa, the freely associated states of Micronesia and the Marshall Islands, and the trust territory of Palau.

Examples of international dialing codes when calls originate in the United States: American Samoa is  011 + 684 + the local number (city codes are not required); London (inner), United Kingdom is 011 + 44 + 171 + the local number (codes are required for specified cities).

The IAC or IDD prefix, Country Code, City (routing) Code, local area code, and local telephone number will be handled as separate data fields, and will not be combined in a single data field.
