The DoDEA Communications Office initiates and manages DoDEA's communications and outreach efforts worldwide. The office coordinates press relations, internal information programs and communication with students, parents, teachers, school administrators and the public.

ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA — December 27, 2005 — The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) proudly announces that four of our teachers have been named as finalists for the 2005 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the nation's highest honor for K-12 teachers in these fields.
The following four DoDEA teachers are being rewarded for their success in using innovative methods and strategies in their classrooms: Brian Farrell, a Science teacher at Ansbach Middle School in Germany; Mary Kollmeyer, a Mathematics teacher at Lejeune High School in North Carolina; Bertha Manning, a Mathematics teacher at Ramstein American High School in Germany; and Paul Sidoff, a Science teacher at Seoul American High School in Korea.
Established by Congress in 1983, and administered for the White House by the National Science Foundation, the Presidential Awards allow for each state and the Department of Defense Schools, to select up to three mathematics and three science teachers as state finalists. From the field of state finalists, a maximum of 108 Presidential Awardees will be announced during a week of celebration events in March 2006 in Washington, DC. Nationwide, there are 253 state finalists for the prestigious Presidential Award this year.
The goal of the Presidential Awards is to identify and recognize highly qualified teachers. As part of the recognition process, Awardees will take part in a weeklong series of networking and professional development activities in Washington, DC. In addition, each Awardee will also receive $10,000 from the national Science Foundation.
"Through their use of new and innovative teaching strategies, these teachers embody the spirit of the DoDEA mission, to provide exemplary programs that inspire and prepare all students for success in a global environment," said Dr. Elizabeth Middlemiss, DoDEA's Associate Director for Education and Principal Deputy Director, "we are so very proud of them all."
