PEACHTREE CITY, GA — February 6, 2007 — Hood Street Elementary School, at Fort Jackson, SC, will close its doors at the end of this school year. Mr. Doug Kelsey, deputy director of the Department of Defense (DoD) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) and Department of Defense Dependents Schools, Cuba, (DoDDS-Cuba), said that the closing will occur because enrollment has declined significantly over the past three to four years.

"We only have a total of 545 students in the community," Kelsey said, "which is about the size of one school. By consolidating operations to two schools, we'll reduce costs and still have the capacity for 800-900 students in case we experience growth." He added that a new $6 million HVAC system and roof are being installed at Pinckney Elementary School.

The closure will result in a decrease of 9.5 DDESS employees. The U.S. Army plans to use the former Hood Street ES building as administrative office space.
