ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA — June 9, 2009 — The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) announced the selection of Paul Dellacroce as the new Area Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment in Europe and Dr. Joyce Lutrey as the new Area Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment for DoDEA's schools in the Pacific.

DoDEA's schools serve the children of military service members and Department of Defense (DoD) civilian employees throughout the world. DoDEA operates 192 schools in 14 districts located in 12 foreign countries, seven states, Guam, and Puerto Rico.

As the Area Superintendents for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, Dellacroce and Lutrey will manage and supervise the Area Office educational staffs and district superintendents for Europe and the Pacific. They will also assist in directing the development of the professional competencies of staff and co-lead with DoDEA's headquarters staff on educational reform agendas to ensure continuous learning.

Lutrey is currently serving as the Superintendent of Higley Unified School District in Gilbert, Ariz. Prior to that, she was the Superintendent of Fruitport Community Schools, Fruitport, Mich. Lutrey was the principal of three schools in Michigan: Saline Middle School, in Saline; Strong Junior High School in Melvindale-Northern Allen Park; and Thurston Elementary in Ann Arbor. Prior to her time as a principal, she was a teacher in Ann Arbor Public Schools.

Lutrey earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education, General Science and Psychology from the University of Michigan, and her Master of Arts degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Eastern Michigan University. She also earned a Specialist of the Arts degree and a Doctorate of Educational Leadership from Eastern Michigan University.

Prior to his new appointment, Dellacroce was the Superintendent of Elizabeth C-1 School District in Elizabeth, Colo., where he had also served as the Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. With 22 years in the field of education, Dellacroce has filled many roles, including teacher, coach, and principal.

"I am excited about this position and grateful to have the chance to serve the students, parents and teachers of DoDEA," said Dellacroce. "My focus will be to ensure students have the skills they need for the 21st century which include critical thinking, problem solving, the ability to use technology and to be creative."

Dellacroce earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, Colo. He earned his Masters of Arts Curriculum and Instruction from Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo.

DoDEA plans, directs, coordinates, and manages pre-kindergarten through 12th grade education programs for Department of Defense (DoD) dependents who would otherwise not have access to a high-quality, public education. DoDEA schools are located in Europe, the Pacific, the United States, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. DoDEA also provides support and resources to Local Education Activities throughout the U.S. that serve children of military families.
