WASHINGTON - Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano today participated in the U.S.-Mexico High Level Group meeting hosted by the Department of State, where she discussed the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) coordination with Mexico to implement a 21^st Century border framework.

“The threats we face increasingly cross international boundaries, and strong international partnerships are critical to ensure the region’s security,” said Secretary Napolitano. “We are committed to working with our partners in Mexico to build a 21^st century border that will meet the security and economic needs of our countries - today and well into the future.”

During the meeting, Secretary Napolitano underscored the Department’s ongoing collaboration with our partners in Mexico to facilitate legitimate trade and travel while securing our borders. In February, Secretary Napolitano traveled to Mexico where she and Mexican Secretary of Finance and Public Credit José Antonio Meade issued a joint statement underscoring the two countries’ shared commitment to securing the global supply chain. 

As part of this declaration, the U.S. and Mexico have agreed to continue to support each other’s respective trusted shipper programs: CBP’s Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) and Mexico’s New Scheme of Certified Companies. C-TPAT is a voluntary public-private sector partnership program that strengthens cargo security throughout the international supply chain by working closely with importers, carriers, consolidators, licensed customs brokers, and manufacturers.

Yesterday, Secretary Napolitano joined Mexican Secretary of the Interior Alejandro Poiré for a moderated dialogue on the U.S.-Mexico security relationship, hosted by the Wilson Center.
