The Origin of the NCTE Fund
The NCTE Fund was established in the 1980s to seek contributions in order to support and advance initiatives that expand opportunities for the teaching and learning of language arts.
Areas of giving include pledges, contributions, gifts in honor of living persons, memorials and bequests. The Fund supports the diverse and continuous needs of the Council. Therefore, fundraising must be ongoing and must depend upon the yearly generosity of NCTE membership and friends of the Council.

NCTE Annual Fund
Contributions to the NCTE Fund support programs that (1) seek to improve the teaching of English and the English language arts at all levels of education; (2) supply a forum for the profession; (3) provide an array of opportunities for teachers to continue their professional growth throughout their careers; and (4) research and address broad educational issues impacting our state, nation, and world.
Century Club
In anticipation of the 100th anniversary of NCTE, new donor category (with a minimum gift of $1000) has been established. Contributions made toward the Century Club will be used to underwrite one of the following categories: (1) assistance for teachers from under-funded districts to attend our annual convention; (2) the establishment of professional development libraries in urban schools; (3) support for participants in Urban Teacher Academy sites; and (4) wherever it may be needed most (as determined by the NCTE Executive Committee).
SLATE (Support for the Learning and Teaching of English)
SLATE seeks to influence public attitudes and policy decisions affecting the teaching of English language arts at local, state, and national levels; to implement and publicize the policies adopted by NCTE; and serves as NCTE’s intellectual freedom network.
Gifts to SLATE may be used to support items such as the creation of SLATE starter sheets, Action Alerts designed to mobilize local support on legislative matters, or as support for the anti-censorship center and related activities.
NCTE Donald H. Graves Writing Award
Established in 2001 by Donald H. Graves, this award annually recognizes teachers in grades K-6 who demonstrate an understanding of student improvement in the teaching of writing.
James R. Squire Office of Policy Research in the English Language Arts
The James R. Squire Office of Policy Research in the English Language Arts will serve as a national clearinghouse for demographic and descriptive studies of matters deemed critical to NCTE’s mission and strategic objectives.
James Moffett Award
NCTE’s Conference on English Education, in conjunction with the National Writing Project, offers this grant to support teacher research projects inspired by the scholarship of James Moffett.
NCTE Award for Poetry for Children
NCTE established its Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children in 1977 to honor a living American poet for his or her aggregate work for children ages 3–13.
TYCA Outstanding Program Award
This award is given annually and honors two-year teachers and their colleges for exemplary programs that enhance students’ language learning, helping them to achieve their college, career, and personal goals.
Edwyna Wheadon Postgraduate Training Scholarship Fund
Edwyna Wheadon Postgraduate Training Scholarship funds will provide funding for professional development experiences for English/Language Arts teachers in public educational institutions. The purpose of the scholarship is to support postgraduate training to enhance teaching skills and/or career development in teaching.
