On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to send best wishes to the people of Kiribati on the thirty-third anniversary of your independence this July 12.

The United States and Kiribati have enjoyed a close relationship based on mutual respect and shared interests since your declaration of independence 33 years ago. Our two countries work closely together on a broad range of issues, from strengthening regional security, to promoting sustainable development and addressing climate change, to protecting fisheries and the environment.

The United States is committed to helping build the future prosperity of Kiribati and the Pacific Region, and we join you in the spirit of our continuing friendship and cooperation. I send all the people of Kiribati my congratulations and best wishes for a year of peace, progress, and prosperity.
