NCBI Launches dbGaP – A Datbase of Whole Genome Associated Studies

The National Library of Medicine (NLM), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), announces the introduction of dbGaP, a new database designed to archive and distribute data from genome wide association (GWA) studies. GWA studies explore the association between specific genes (genotype information) and observable traits, such as blood pressure and weight, or the presence or absence of a disease or condition (phenotype information). Connecting phenotype and genotype data provides information about the genes that may be involved in a disease process or condition, which can be critical for better understanding the disease and for developing new diagnostic methods and treatments.

NLM announces informatics training grant awards

Donald A.B. Lindberg, MD, Director of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), today announced that the NLM is awarding 18 five-year grants, totaling more than $75million, for research training in biomedical informatics, the discipline that seeks to apply computer and communications technology to the field of health.

New Federal AIDS Website launched

AIDS.gov serves as an information gateway to guide users to Federal domestic HIV/AIDS information and resources.

The site’s goal is to ease access to information on Federal HIV/AIDS prevention, testing, treatment, and research programs, policies, and resources. AIDS.gov contains links to guide you to information on those topics.

NLM Classification now available in PDF

This edition incorporates all 2006 additions and changes to the schedules (see Class Numbers Added and Canceled) and to the index, which has been newly edited and updated with appropriate MeSH concepts. Ninety-eight new main index entries were created, of which fifty-seven are from the 2006 MeSH; the remainder are MeSH terms from previous years. Numerous main index entries and cross references were modified to reflect changes in the MeSH vocabulary. See the site for more information and download the files.

NLM Launches ToxMystery Learning Site

ToxMystery is the National Library of Medicine’s new interactive learning site, designed to help kids age 7 to 10 find clues about toxic substances that can lurk in the home. With lively animations, surprising sound effects and lots of positive reinforcement, ToxMystery provides a fun, game-like experience, while teaching important lessons about potential environmental health hazards.
