National Coastal Program

Coastal Program Logo

The Coastal Program is one of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s most successful and effective cooperative conservation programs.  The mission of the Coastal Program is to protect and recover Federal Trust Species (threatened and endangered species, migratory birds, marine mammals, and inter-jurisdictional fish) by supporting voluntary restoration, enhancement and protection of high-priority coastal habitats.  The national Coastal Program provides financial and technical assistance to on-the-ground habitat restoration and protection projects through locally-based field coordinators in 24 coastal areas around the nation.  Seven of these offices are located within the Southeast Region (Region 4).

Southeast Region Coastal Program

The Southeast Region with the Gulf, Atlantic, and Caribbean coasts is the largest, most diverse and most productive coastal area in the nation, representing a wide diversity of  habitats ranging from the ecologically rare maritime forest, tropical rain forest, coral reefs, coastal dune lakes, and pocosin wetlands to great expanses of seagrass beds, coastal marsh, and bottomland forests.  Within this coastal area is located 65 National Wildlife Refuges with over two million acres of public trust lands, three of the four U. S. migratory bird flyways, approximately 300 estuarine systems that support 98 percent of all Gulf of Mexico and 94 percent of all southeast Atlantic commercial fishing landings, and numerous protected threatened and endangered species and species of concern.

The Southeast Region Coastal Program is working with our many partners to identify opportunities and implement strategic landscape based habitat projects at the local level to protect and restore these coastal habitats and species.  For more detailed information on our Program please refer to the Southeast Region Coastal Program Strategic Plan 2006-2011.  This five year plan is currently under revision for 2012-2017 to update and add our newest program, the Coastal Program in the Northern Gulf of Mexico (not shown on map below, please contact Patric_Harper@fws.gov)
