Agriculture and Food Security
Ethiopia’s economy is dependent on agriculture, and the country’s rapidly growing population underscores the need for sustainable and high-quality access to food. Through Feed the Future, USAID enhances food security, increases agricultural productivity, and promotes resilience, especially among vulnerable populations.
Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance
USAID supports activities in good governance, and specifically works with the Government of Ethiopia to improve public access to and confidence in the legal system by providing continuing education to the judiciary on legal principles, including human rights. In addition, USAID supports local governments to help them improve the delivery of services.
Economic Growth and Trade
State dominance over the economy severely limits access to credit, private land ownership, and agricultural inputs. USAID works to strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises and smallholder farms, providing access to credit and technical support.
Education
USAID works with the Ministry of Education and donors to improve student level outcomes and achievements, particularly in early grade reading. USAID’s education program helps millions of students advance in their education while supporting capacity building efforts for teachers and institutions.
Environment
By incorporating environmental issues into its efforts within Ethiopia, USAID strives to develop initiatives that make improvements across sectors and promote sustainable development. USAID programs also support biodiversity conservation in some of the remaining natural forests and the revitalization of rangeland productivity in pastoral areas.
Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment
USAID promotes gender equality and women’s empowerment across its portfolio, focusing on increasing women’s social, economic, and political status. Programs and capacity building interventions encourage participation of women as beneficiaries, agents of change, and project partners.
Global Health
Despite major strides in improving the health of the population over the last decade, the Ethiopian people still face high rates of disease and death. USAID's integrated health care program addresses a wide range of needs including maternal and child health, nutrition, and infectious diseases such as HIV.
USAID also emphasizes strengthening health systems and building skilled workforces.
Water and Sanitation
USAID supports the efforts of the Government of Ethiopia to improve water supply in rural communities and achieve universal access to sanitation by incorporating water, sanitation, and hygiene activities across multiple sectors.
Working in Crises and Conflict
USAID supports government and civil society interaction to improve conflict management policies and practices at the local, regional, and national levels. USAID continues to collaborate with the Government of Ethiopia, international organizations, U.N. agencies, and other donors to respond to disasters in a timely manner and increase vulnerable populations’ resilience to withstand the effects of shocks.
