Energy Management at DOE

Addressing climate change is a fundamental priority for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). As the agency charged with advancing the nation's energy security, DOE is committed to leading by example in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with agency operations and facilities.

Executive Order (E.O.) 13514 requires all Federal agencies to establish an integrated sustainability plan towards:

• Reducing GHG emissions.
• Using water more efficiently.
• Promoting pollution prevention and eliminating waste.
• Constructing high performance sustainable buildings.
• Purchasing energy efficient and environmentally preferred products.
• Reducing the use of fossil fuels through improved fleet management.

The Secretary of Energy issues a memorandum for heads of Departmental elements (PDF 73 KB) creating DOE goals surrounding E.O. 13514. It commits DOE to a 28% reduction in agency GHG emissions by fiscal year (FY) 2010. FEMP is committed to help DOE reach this aggressive GHG emission reduction goal, as well as requirements outlined in E.O. 13514 and other Federal regulations.
