Non-Governmental Organizations Involved in Species Conservation
Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)
AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums are leaders in the protection of endangered species. In 1981, AZA established the Species Survival Plan Program™ (SSP), which is a long-term plan involving conservation breeding, habitat preservation, public education, field conservation, and supportive research to ensure survival for many of the planet's threatened and endangered species. An official understanding has been entered into between the AZA and the Service which establishes a broad framework for joint participation for the conservation of native North American animal and plant species and their habitats.

Bat Conservation International (BCI)
Bat Conservation International conducts and supports science-based conservation efforts around the world. Working with many partners and colleagues, these innovative programs combine research, education and direct conservation to ensure bats will be helping to maintain healthy environments and human economies far into the future. An official understanding has been entered into between BCI and the Service which establishes a general framework for cooperation and participation between BCI and the FWS in the conservation of bat species that are Federally listed or proposed for listing as endangered or threatened, or are candidates for placement on the Federal list of endangered and threatened wildlife, and to cooperate in activities necessary to maintain or increase the productivity of bats and their habitat on lands managed by the Service, and on other lands as appropriate.

Center for Plant Conservation
The Center for Plant Conservation (CPC) is dedicated solely to preventing the extinction of U.S. native plants. The cooperative CPC network maintains the National Collection of Endangered Plants, believed to be the largest living collection of rare plants in the world. Live plant material is collected from nature under controlled conditions and then carefully maintained as seed, rooted cuttings or mature plants. Network institutions conduct horticultural research and carefully monitor these materials so that imperiled plants can be grown and returned to natural habitats. An official understanding has been entered into between the CPC and the Service which establishes a broad framework for collaboration for the conservation of native North American plant and animal species and their habitats.

National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF)
The NFWF is a non-profit organization that preserves and restores our nation’s native wildlife species and habitats. Created by Congress in 1984, NFWF directs public conservation dollars to the most pressing environmental needs and matches those investments with private funds. Led by a team of PhD scientists, their Keystone Programs address the challenges facing key endangered, threatened, or declining species that are indicators for overall ecosystem health.

The Nature Conservancy
The Nature Conservancy is a conservation organization that works in all 50 United States and more than 30 countries to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent Earth's diversity of life — by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. They apply high-level strategies to fight global warming and preserve oceans, rivers and protected areas.

NatureServe
NatureServe is a non-profit conservation organization that provides the scientific information and tools needed to help guide effective conservation action. NatureServe and its network of natural heritage programs are a great source for information about rare and endangered species and threatened ecosystems.

North American Native Fishes Association
he North American Native Fishes Association is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt corporation dedicated to the appreciation, study and conservation of the continent's native fishes. Through the captive propagation of native fishes, they play a key role in conservation efforts by providing crucial life history information about a species before it becomes endangered.

The Peregrine Fund
The mission of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is to protect human health and to safeguard the natural environment -- air, water and land -- upon which life depends. They have joined with NOAA and the state of Florida in the establishment of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary to conserve and manage endangered coral reefs. The Marine Sanctuary operates under a broad-based management plan intended to enhance the sustainability of the Florida Keys reefs.

Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership
The whooping crane is a critically imperiled North American crane species with fewer than 250 birds in a single wild population that migrates between northwestern Canada and the Gulf Coast of Texas. The International Whooping Crane Recovery Team has recommended the establishment of additional populations to safeguard against extinction. The Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership, a group of agencies, non-profit organizations and individuals, was formed to implement the Recovery Team's recommendation by restoring a migratory population of whooping cranes to eastern North America.
