Wages and salaries rose 0.4 percent and benefit costs rose 0.6 percent for civilian
workers, seasonally adjusted, from March to June 2012. Over the year, compensation
rose 1.7 percent, wages and salaries 1.7 percent, and benefits 2.1 percent.

Private industry employers spent an average of $28.80 per hour worked for employee compensation in June
2012. Wages and salaries averaged $20.27 and benefits averaged $8.52, of which retirement and savings plans
averaged $1.02 per hour worked.
